Where am I from:

Namibia

Born on the 25 August 1982

I live in Rundu, Kavango Region in the North-eastern part of Namibia

Languages:

Rukwangali (1st), English (2nd), and Nyemba (3rd)

Current and previous works:

Currently I’m working for the Future Okavango research project (www.future-okavango.org), employed by the Namibia Nature Foundation as research field assistant [Para ecologist] in Mashare, east Rundu, Namibia.

Type of work I do:

I conduct interviews and translate for researchers Rukwangali / English, download data from weather stations, assist in organising community meetings, conservation agriculture projects and assisting the production of participatory awareness films like Wiza wetu! Our forest!, Mema eparu water is life and Liparu lyetu! Our life!. I also assist various researchers in their field work and collect data for the soil scientists, microbiologists, economists, and botanists.

Previous working experiences: Para-ecologist in BIOTA Southern Africa:

I was an assistant of biologists from 2001 until 2004. From October 2004 until April 2010 I worked as a para-ecologist in the BIOTA Southern Africa project (www.biota-africa.org). During this time, I collected insects, monitored plant phenology, downloaded data from automatic weather stations and conducted environmental awareness activities with school children.

My skills and experience:

Computer skills: MS Excel, MS Word, MS Power point, Internet Explorer, Email
Entering data in to a MS excel data base Operating a GPS [global positioning system] Installing and maintaining of automatic weather station Monitoring biodiversity and collection plant and insect specimens Use of digital photo and video cameras Taking pictures of plants for scientific purpose Facilitation of workshops Conflict management Giving poster and oral presentations at conferences and international meetings (like COP 9 in Bonn / Germany).

Training courses:

Beside the six annual para-ecologist training workshops of BIOTA Southern Africa, I attended a course at the National Museum of Namibia on terrestrial arthropod data collecting from 29 June to 3 July 2008 and awarded with a certificate.

Special interests and dreams:

Working with people of different cultures to share knowledge and achieve mutual aims and goals; to help in combatting desertification, deforestation and illegal logging; to educate people and youth in environment awareness and to reduce the impact of climate changes on the environment; to change people’s behaviour towards our natural recourses in a careful approach.
